The purpose of classical ballet is to tell the audience a story through mime and physical virtuosity. Technical perfection, choreography, conditioning and flexibility are all artistic elements that are combined to make a ballet performance what it is. Everything from intricate set designs to elegant costumes and makeup are crucial to a ballerina’s tale and the overall impression on the audience.
At Arête, we are proud to have industry leaders of classical ballet within our patronage and faculty. Offering world-renowned mentoring and instruction, our students are blessed to have access to an absolute wealth of knowledge.

With over 13,000 members spread across 83 countries, The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) is one of the largest and most influential education and training organisations in the world. We offer their internationally-recognised ‘Faculty of Education’ degree programs to the younger students participating in our summer school classes in Brisbane. At whatever age or stage, anyone with an appreciation of classical ballet and jazz can participate in the work of RAD.
Arête offers examination opportunities to all students wishing to pursue graded and vocational level certificates in this syllabus.
Lyrical dance is a combination of classical ballet, contemporary techniques and early jazz styles. This style is wonderfully expressive and focuses on movement that best reflects the emotions behind the 'lyrics' of the song.
Arête recommends our lyrical dance class to all jazz and ballet students as it will enhance their expressiveness, refinement and freedom of movement.
Flexibility, strength, teamwork and technical form are some of the core enablers for success in acrobatics and gymnastics. Instructed in a fun-filled, challenging and semi-formal environment, our acro classes have students learning beginner and advanced routines.
Arête gymnastics and acrobatics lessons are practiced on the safety of our sprung flooring. We also use purpose-designed equipment, crash mats and flooring mats. Safety is always paramount in the teaching of this genre in particular.
Jazz is a marriage of several contemporary styles. Performed within a commercial setting or just for sheer enjoyment, commercial jazz is composed to entertain, inspire and invigorate the audience and the performer.
Arête commercial jazz dance classes are fun and sprightly. Our lessons involve bold and distinctive moves such as big leaps, quick turns and fancy footwork, as well as the latest routines. As with any style, jazz supplements and reflects the emotion and energy of the music.
Contemporary dance is an expressive art form. It was pioneered by Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham, who believed dancers should be free to express their deepest feelings through movement of originality. Contemporary techniques challenge the normality of other styles and extends the dancer's repertoire through more intricate floor work, leaps, turns and change of balance.
We encourage our students to participate in a contemporary dance class, as it gives them a fantastic sense of relaxation, enjoyment and presentation.
Choreography is the phenomenon of movement composition. Dancers who are interested in choreography show desire and skill in music responsiveness, feeling through motion, performance form and various components of stagecraft. Choreography is a pure art form and very few can truly accomplish its stylistic works.
It is for this reason that at Arête, we fully nurture the skill and desire to choreograph within our young stars. If you or your child are interested in the creation of performance, then this dance class is a must.
Musical theatre combines singing, acting and dancing to shape performing artists. Students of our musical theatre program receive tuition and coaching in vocals, stagecraft, contemporary dance methods, presentation and much more.
Our musical theatre students receive opportunities to showcase their skills with auditions and performances throughout the year. No matter the age or skill level, all our students will have access to our performance programs in Brisbane and affiliate agency, Queensland Young Performers.
Tap dance was dawned from a fusion of traditional Irish and British clogging during early America. Legends such as Gene Kelly spruced and revolutionised this unique style, further diversifying and energising this genre.
With commercial and technical qualities conveyed in a colourfully expressive style, tap is one of our most popular classes. Tap dance is an essential element for the avid performing artist’s repertoire.
Dancers are not only required to be artistic and expressive, but another feather they require in their cap is that of both aerobic and anaerobic fitness and stamina. The increasing athleticism of dancers today calls for a greater understanding of the body and it's nutritional requirements as well as knowing ones own physical fitness limitations and how best to improve them.
Arête dancers are very self driven and competitive with their own physical fitness. We love to help our team mates improve and train with us during group, team building exercise activities. We even participate in fun runs, fitness challenges and personal goal setting.
The combination of subject matter experts, industry leaders and active performers within our faculty enables a diverse array of instructional assistance, choreography and expertise in any facet of the performing arts industry.
Arête faculty offer solo tuition to all willing students in both classical and contemporary dance. So call reception on (07) 3890 8728 to book an individual class at our Brisbane studio.
