The Vaganova Method

The Messerer Method

The Vaganova Method is a ballet technique and training system devised by the Russian dancer and pedagogue, Agrippina Vaganova. It fuses elements of the traditional French style within the romantic era and the dramatic soulfulness of the Russian character, with the athleticism and virtuosity of Italian technique.

This training system is designed to involve the whole body in every movement, with equal attention paid to the upper body, legs and feet. Vaganova believed that this approach increased consciousness of the body, thus creating a harmony of movement and greater expressive range.

Our ballet classes have been passionately devised to focus on the elements of Vaganova training. They center on building epaulement, or the stylised turning of the shoulders and body.

This practice is partnered with and leads to the development of total stability and strength in the back. It produces harmonious coordination of the body and continuity of movement.
Effective core strength enables consistently precise and easy movement of the body. Therefore, classical coaching in epaulement instills in the dancer an intuitive anticipation of how best to use every part of their body to evoke breathtaking results, right down to the hands and eyes.
Asaf Messerer, 1903 - 1992, was the founder, choreographer and ballet master for the Bolshoi Theatre. The Messerer method has an international reputation for providing an outstanding classical model that stresses both precision and fluid, artistic control.
